ACTIVITIES

Apple Tree Cot is minutes away from Cawsand Beach with its countless rock pools, great swimming and general beach fun, as well as the stunning Southwest Coast Path.  Come rain or shine, there is plenty to do for adults and kids in the surrounding area of the Rame Peninsular, even during the winter months.

Beaches

Being so close to Cawsand Beach means that it’s easy to pop back for an extra towel or to get snacks.  Kayak hire is available during the summer months.  The village has two other beaches, Girt Beach and Kingsand Beach if you fancy a change of view!

Whitsand Bay, only a 10 minute drive away, is a dramatic 3 mile long stretch of sandy beaches perfect for walking, kite flying, body boarding, surfing, wave jumping and much more.  Tregonhawke Beach has RNLI liveguards, a surf school and cliff top café. www.rnli.org www.clifftopcafe.co.uk

Kayaking

Cawsand Bay with its hidden coves and mysterious Victorian torpedo base offers great kayaking.  For keen fisherman, there are several good fishing spots accessible by kayak too.  Kayaks can be rented from Cawsand Beach during the summer months.  If you have your own kayaks, then they could be locked up on the beach.

Fishing

Many an hour has been spent fishing from the steps off Garrett St in Cawsand or by the Congregational Church.  The odd mackerel or pollack has been caught from there. The steps are also great for crabbing and teasing 'shannies' out of their hiding places.

For more serious fishing, boat trips are organised by Fish‘n Trips www.plymouthboattrips.co.uk/fishing/

Paddle Boarding

If you fancy trying out paddle boarding (standing on large surf board with long paddle) then there are regular evening trips off Cawsand Beach organised by Suprental.  They can also organise lessons and equipment rental. www.suprental.co.uk

Surfing

Whitsand Bay is a great place for surfing.  The Adventure Bay Surf school comes highly recommended for complete beginners to experienced surfers alike.  www.adventurebay.co.uk

Coasteering

Dan from the surf school does a great coasteering trip around Rame Head; a great way to get a fish eye’s view of this dramatic piece of coastline.  www.adventurebay.co.uk

Walking

The Southwest Coast Path is seconds away from Apple Tree Cot's doorstep!  Whether you head south towards Penlee Point with its pretty folly, or head north beyond Kingsand to Cremyll through Mount Edgecombe Park, the views are stunning.  If you don’t fancy walking home, then simply catch the 70A or 70B bus home!  There are a number of circular walks too.  Details are provided in the cottage.  www.southwestcoastpath

Mount Edgecombe

Cawsand and Kingsand are surrounded by the Mount Edgecombe estate.  Mount Edgecombe House, the family seat is located at Cremyll and is set in Grade I listed Cornish Gardens.  Apple Tree Cot was owned by the Estate until the 1950’s.  From 1912 the family of the Earl’s 2nd groomsman occupied the cottage after he had been fatally wounded by one of the Earl’s horses.  Today, Mount Edgecombe holds lots of family events and opens the house to the public.  www.mountedgcumbe.gov.uk
